Traditionally, 5th grade students are asked to purchase recorders to use in music class. Each recorder may only be used for one individual student, in order to not spread germs. They are then usually taken home at the end of the year, never to be used again. Most adults remember playing recorders in music class as a child, and most of us hated playing them. I don't want my students to have that negative stigma with playing an instrument. Students should also not be asked to purchase an instrument that they will not use outside of class. Students want to use instruments that are fun and contemporary. Ukuleles fit that description. I would be able to use one set of ukuleles with every class- year after year. Ukuleles will give my students the opportunity to reach their true potential in music.
