My belief is that students should be actively engaged in their learning. We are striving to create an environment where students not only learning, but are doing something with what they are learning. In order to facilitate this movement we have begun creating a series of Problem Based Learning Units. For this particular unit, students are conducting action research to answer the driving question: How can a school garden support a healthy and cost efficient food source for St. Marys residents? The long term goal will be the creation of a student-run farmers market on our campus available for public consumption. The long-term benefits of this project will stretch way beyond the classroom walls. As students progress through this project their research will lead them to begin understanding the health benefits of fresh, locally grown foods vs. store bought or processed foods. Their study will also lead to cost comparisons, budgeting, soil comparison, soil testing, scientific investigations, experimental design, water collection, composting, soil and water conservation, and the list could go on and on. With the tools that we are seeking funding for students will be able to use the cultivator to prepare our garden soil and understand machinery and workplace safety. The garden hoes will be used for everyday maintenance of our garden. We have also asked for a soil pH testing kit so that students can add an additional variable to their study as they try to find the most efficient soil mixture. The skills and knowledge students will gain from this project will give them a lasting experience and the information needed to grow a healthier, more educated community.
