I have been thinking about implementing flexible seating in my classroom for many months. This dream is starting to become a reality! Many of my first graders have a difficult time sitting in desks and chairs all day long. Flexible seating is a way to reach every student and set them up for success in the classroom. It increases motivation and gives students a chance to make choices that will help them reach their academic goals. Flexible seating is a way to motivate students and encourage collaborative conversations about learning. I believe that students should be able to choose where they learn best in the classroom, especially those that struggle to focus throughout the school day. Ultimately, I would like to get more flexible seating in my classroom because it will help my students. First, by giving them choice of where they can sit to complete their work, they are given ownership of their learning. Also, these seating options are recommended for students who have trouble focusing. I think it is important to give students tools to use to help them overcome challenges in the classroom, like attention. In order to accomplish this project, I would like to get the following seating options for my students: 8 wobble chairs, 10 classroom stools, and 4 balance disc seats. The seating will be divided evenly between 4 table teams. Students at each table team can choose to sit in one of the following seats: 2 wobble chairs, 2-3 stools, and 1 balance disc seat. The seating options do not require students to sit still, which will ultimately help with their focus/attention. I want to provide the best learning environment for my students and I believe flexible seating is the next step!
