My students live in what has been named one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a common marker for poverty. Our charter school is more than a place to learn to read and write for our students, but an oasis within this dangerous area where they can learn, play, run, and be children while still feeling safe. My second graders are as inspirational to me as I hope to be for them. Their enthusiasm for exploring and learning about everything around them just blows me away! We as adults often assume that 7- and 8-year-olds are not developmentally ready for complex thought and problem solving, but they continue to surprise me with their level of inquisitiveness and perceptiveness.
