Every year I have 22-25 kindergarteners from ALL aspects of life. I have 180 days to lay a foundation they will need to build upon for the rest of their lives. I have to teach them math, reading, writing, respect, social skills, rules, winning and losing, and a whole slew of other skills. "Play" is a 4 letter word in my world. Some people come up with other phrases to hide it, but bottom line, kids need to play. Nothing says you can't incorporate learning into play and that is what I am striving for. Yes, I could sit all my students down with worksheets and "teach" them. Yet nothing is more satisfying then listening to a group of diversified students working as a group to solve situations they themselves have come up with. All the while learning to be a functioning citizen in society. I just need the tools (that the state isn't going to supply me with) to give these students as many opportunities as possible!
