Studies have proven that students learn better when they are free to wiggle and move. Active/flexible seating allows students to bounce, lean, twist, kick, fidget, wobble, peddle, roll, stand, kneel and sit to suit their needs. It gives them some choice and control over their environment and encourages sharing and a sense of community as they share supplies and space. They are allowed to find comfortable spaces which helps them stay calm, focused and productive. Students also learn better when they have a chance to collaborate. The wobble cushions, stools and other flexible seating options allow students to easily pair up, work in small groups or discuss as a whole class. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADD and ADHD. Many seating options stimulate students' sense of touch which help them focus and process information. The goal of this project is to increase student learning and create a focused, collaborative classroom.
