I am a self-contained special education teacher. My students have moderate cognitive disabilities. They love learning through interactive games and are highly motivated to participate when they are able to be involved in the learning. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. My students are with me all day except for lunch and block. We work on basic reading of sight words, safety signs, and signs they see in their community. We work on identifying money in math and basic daily living skills during our science and life skills periods. My students have been fortunate, in the past, because I have had a school budget to purchase technology and supplies. However, our school district is facing steep budget cuts for the upcoming school year (as many school districts are also facing budget cuts). I want my students to have a multitude of learning opportunities and have hands-on learning experiences.
