Catch them with a book! We want to capture all our students in the wonders of a good book! As teachers, we are always trying to keep the content of our lessons engaging for our students. We have a lot of students who speak English as a second language so reading does not come easily to them. We need to pick engaging stories that they can relate to if we want them to become readers! We are also always trying to incorporate new literature into our lessons. We usually read The Giver with our eighth graders, but most of our students said they have already read the book, so we want to have them read something new. If we are able to get a class set of Zach's Lie, then we can also read the sequel the following quarter. It's also a book that has a character that many of our students will identify with. He has struggles but manages to persevere. Last year we really worked on getting students to engage in discussions after reading, and this novel will lead to some wonderful socratic seminars with our students. We are looking at how struggle can cause growth within oneself. This novel will fit perfectly into that objective. Our students need books that are really able to grab the reader right from the beginning, otherwise we lose them!
