Through this project, I would like to supply each of my students with a copy of the novel Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. Together, we will explore the themes of resilience, friendship, and family that Applegate writes about. While my students will be able to learn multiple Language Arts skills through the book such as inferring, predicting, synthesizing, analyzing, and more, they will more importantly learn about accepting others. I want each of my students to go home on the first day with a book that is their own. It is not rented or borrowed, but their very own book. They're going to be so engaged within the text that they will be able to have conversations with every student in my classroom, bringing them together. Crenshaw tells the story of a boy named Jackson and his family who have fallen on hard times. There's no more money for rent. Not much for food, either. His parents, his little sister, and their dog may have to live in their minivan. Again. Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything? Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary. Help me show students how come together through this inspiring story.
