Although my students are in 5th grade, having the ability to have my students sit around me during read aloud and other teachable moments is one of my favorite times of the day. Our current rug does not allow that opportunity, as I am trying to cram 25 adult size bodies on to a used and tattered 6 by 9 foot rug that was previously used last year by a first grade classroom. With such a small space for my students to gather, many students are forced to sit on the cold and hard tile floor. This does not fit the warm homey classroom environment I strive for as a teacher. Instead, students often complain that they are cramped, their bottoms hurt, or that they want to get up and stand. My students also love the opportunity to sit on the rug and work either collaboratively or independently and stretch out. By having a large enough rug students are able to spread out and not distract others around them and take away from valuable learning time. I know a rug and some book boxes seem like a simple request but to my students these classroom materials would make an immense difference. Teaching 5th graders how to stay organized is imperative to their learning, especially as they prepare to transition to middle school. The book boxes would allow my students to keep their books in an easily accessible manner which makes for quick transitions as we rotate during our CAFE reading block. CAFE stands for C=Comprehension A=Accuracy F=Fluency E=Expanded Vocabulary. Students often loose their books in the vortex that is their desk, and books often become damaged or lost. With the help of book boxes, students are learning how to organize and respect their school materials.
