As a new school, we have the opportunity to apply real-world theatrical inventory techniques to our brand new auditorium and surrounding areas. By studying and applying how different schools and professional theatres create, manage, and maintain their inventory, students learn the importance of order, professionalism and maintenance in a theatrical setting. We will use the supplies listed to inventory, archive, and manage our new equipment. Students will study books like The Art of Management and The Backstage Handbook, and interview other theatres to learn the best ways to store theatrical equipment that ranges from light and sound to shop equipment. The items we have requested are primarily shelving. The binned shelves will be used to store our sound equipment like wireless microphones, cordage and connectors. The bins allow us to create and apply labels (with the label maker requested), so each microphone and cord has a correct home. This is helpful in managing inventory and ensuring proper treatment of our equipment. The Boltless Shelving and Peg Board are for our lighting and shop equipment. This equipment tends to be heavier and so the MDF backing on the shelving will allow it to carry weight. These units will be placed in our shop and lighting room. We have requested two peg boards, and the students' research of other theater companies will determine where they are placed. The two competing ideas right now are both in the shop for tools, or one in the shop and one in the light room (for cordage, clamps and tape). Overall, a theatre management system will give our students a hands on application of skills that can be transferred to many other learning areas.
