Desks are in short supply at the high school where I teach. Many are broken, and most classrooms don't have enough for each student to have one. The desks are old and have lived a long life. The ones that have survived were used by my students' parents (and they weren't the first). Surprisingly, I do not think a fleet of new desks is the answer. Over one-third of my 120+ students have IEPs for ADD, ADHD, frequent breaks, emotional disorders, among other mental obstacles. Our school strives for full-inclusion classes, so I have many special education students as well. Included in my wish list are fidgets to improve focus (such as with the Fidget Cubes and Bouncy Bands), desk-alternative seating (yoga balls, learning stools, bouncy bands and a couch), as well as other accommodating supplies selected to help benefit student movement and concentration (lap desks and activity tables). Many of my students do not sleep on a bed at home. Many students do not speak English at home. In hopes of raising state standardized test scores, "at-risk" students are required to come to school additional days to work on core subjects--especially English/Reading. They're uncomfortable, easily frustrated, and have short attention-spans. What I hope to accomplish with the variety of seating options I've asked for, is a more inviting and comfortable learning environment that altogether welcomes, inspires, and motivates students. I am certain beyond doubt that these upgrades will make the hours at a desk more bearable and allow for their bodies to either rest or comfortably move while maintaining focus and exercising their minds.
