During last semester, a students started asking to sit in my own rolly chair at the beginning of class every day. Within weeks I started noticing a difference in him. This particular student, like many of my students, had never passed a math STAAR test and consequently had given up on trying years ago. This small act of me allowing him to sit in my chair each day was a game-changer. He started transforming before my eyes... he was the first to class, he became a self-appointed "enforcer" by kindly giving reminders to those off task, he took notes, he asked questions, even asking me to work with him one-on-one. By May, this student was rolling around the room to groups answering questions and peer-tutoring every chance he had. All from the comfort of that rolly chair! After witnessing this change in one student, I would like to fully implement this in my classroom. The gaming chair, bean bag, teen active chairs, ottoman, video rocker, saucer chair and balance ball will all provide different seating for my students. They will allow a less rigid learning atmosphere while also providing those students that need to move to stay focused, a means to do so. The bouncy bands will go on the desks for those students that still like to sit in desks but also aren't able to sit still for long. The carpet tiles, lap trays and low tables will allow students that prefer to sit on the floor, a clean, easy way to do so. Most excitedly, the two dry erase tables will provide a perfect place for these kids to practice math problems with dry erase markers. You would be surprised at what kids will work when allowed to draw on their desk! They LOVE it!
