Each year, we observe Patriot’s Day on September 11, remembering the bravery and courage so many people had to show during such a crisis. Time has not lessened the impact the events of this day. Teachers often come to the library media center for picture books and chapter books to help the students understand why Patriot’s Day is observed. Chosen are books that tell of bravery and courage, of selflessness and morality. These books will help guide the conversation teachers and students have about the events of September 11. These authors have retold stories of 9/11 in a way for children to understand how amazing and resilient we can be when we come together. The stories selected include a story of retired firefighters who used their retired, restored fireboat to help battle the blazes in New York that day in “Fireboat”, to the heroic “Saved by the Boats”, the largest sea evacuation in history- nearly 500,000 people safely evacuated the day the towers were hit. The titles selected are an excellent representation of the stories we can use with our children in the classroom.
