Like most young adults, our students are fascinated with technology and finding different ways to express themselves. I want to tap into that interest by teaching them about the historical and present day relevance of art through the study of typography. The students will study about graphic designs that have impacted our lives and the artists who created them. Taking inspiration from them, students will create unique collages using both positive and negative spaces created by die-cut letters and combining them with drawing and painting techniques. Through this cross-curriculum project, students will be using their newly gained knowledge of design history along with their math and writing skills to create unique artwork that is relevant to them using the technology of a Cricut die-cut machine I want my students to know that creativity does not just happen in a studio or art class; it follows us everywhere and helps us to invent new things and solves problems of all different kinds. It is also important they understand that art is not just what we see in museums and galleries, but that it touches our lives in almost everything we do. I want them to feel empowered by having the ability to create unique artwork and to be able to personalize their world.
