It is critical for students to be a part of their learning process. Knowing their own reading and writing levels, celebrating their successes and formulating a plan to tackle their challenge areas is a key component in making them a part of this process. Student-created data binders are a vital part of students "owning" their data. At the beginning of the year, we take a quick look back at our reading and writing levels from the end of our 3rd-grade year. We discuss what "on-level" and "above-level" look like in 4th grade. We set goals and create graphs to display our goals. We store assessments and monitoring sheets in our binders. We use our binders when having weekly and quarterly conferences about our progress.
