The books in my classroom are ancient. They are "busted," as my students say. They don't even look appealing to read. And as hard as it is to not "judge a book by its cover," this is middle school, after all. I'm blessed with eager students who are buying into my focus on reading, but my selection is grim. Our classroom needs more current titles that focus on themes they can relate to, discuss and learn from. Each book will allow a small group to choose a subject that actually interests them, allowing them to group themselves by interest. Having new titles with current and relatable issues can both bring students together and create interesting discussions.
