In my classroom, I aim to develop all students into life-long readers. We read a multitude of texts as a class, but with a very diverse group of students (as far as their racial and class backgrounds go and their varying levels of reading) it's hard to make that one text fit all of them. Developing a love for reading is like working out a specific muscle: it's difficult; it's complex; it can be rewarding, but it can also be painful if you're reading books that aren't at your level of reading (whether that pain is found in mind-numbing boredom or the paralyzing sentiment of feeling like you can't do something your peers can do). Every grading period, students are asked to complete an Independent Reading Project. Your generous donation would help supply a diverse classroom library for my diverse readers as we work to challenge our individual reading levels and create a classroom centered around reading.
