Our school is located in a rural community where students are used to spending A LOT of time outside and many of our kids have gardens and raise chickens at home. Sitting still in a classroom indoors is a challenge for most 12-14 year olds, but our students in particular long to be outdoors. As an innovative school, we have recently started initiatives to meet our students academic as well as social and developmental needs. In Spring of 2016, our special ed. students created a beautiful vegetable and flower garden just outside of the media center and they were able to use it for projects in every subject area! There were also drastic improvements in behavior after students became invested in the garden.
