In a world full of unjustice and racism, the classroom is where anti-racism, kindness and love can and must be cultivated. My students represent a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds, all of which are valued and celebrated within our classroom. Many of my students do not normally see themselves in the children's books available as current, popular children's books do not always showcase their specific ethnicity and race. It is so important for my students to see themselves in the characters within the books we read.
Help me celebrate diversity and teach inclusion, love and anti-racism within my classroom. Help me teach my students of different ethnicity and race unlike their own, broadening their understanding of the world around them and opening their minds to diverse ways of thinking and living. Help me show my students they are like many children in different children's books and they are important and loved. Teaching at a Global Magnet public school in Western North Carolina, we strive to embed culturally diverse and relevant teaching into our instruction daily. The addition of these rich texts highlighting a variety of ethnicities and races will bring an increased level of cultural awareness to my classroom.
From a teacher read-aloud to partner reading to independent reading, the children's books purchased will be woven into the everyday learning of my students. These books will support lessons that will bring our classroom closer together as a family. We will learn about different traditions and cultures of others and celebrate the diversity within our classroom. Through the purchase of rich, culturally diverse texts, my students will delve into another child's world, gaining multicultural awareness and becoming compassionate human beings who are a critical and valued part of our community and greater world.
