Most first grade classes begin with students at many different levels in literacy and math, but this year, the gaps are vast. In order to better meet students' needs we need to employ all resources available to us. Earphones For All allows us to use leveled, online programs for guided practice according to our students' needs. Online programs such as Zearn (Math), Raz Kids and Istation (Spanish Reading) provide practice at a student's level as well as offering valuable feedback to us about student progress. When students are engaged using computers independently, we can meet more easily and efficiently with small groups to target our instruction to the varied needs of each group. This year, I have students who are still struggling to learn letter sounds and decoding simple three - five letter words as well as students who are fluent readers in both English and Spanish. Having meaningful, independent center activities such as the online programs mentioned above, allows me to meet with five different groups several times a week to deliver lessons appropriate to each group's needs. The same is true for math. I have students who understand number concept for double digit numbers, who can add and subtract larger numbers as well as students who are struggling to master number concept to 10. Again, having a math center at which students can have engaging practice adjusted to their level, can free me up to teach needs based lessons to different groups of students several times a month. After last year's experience with virtual learning, I prefer students to be working with a teacher, manipulatives and paper and pencil. However, I have learned that the above mentioned educational programs have great value when used in an instructional environment in conjunction with direct teaching and hands on activities.
