When this project gets funded, I will be able to use these lock boxes several different ways. I have recently taken a class, Teach like a Pirate, that has really changed the way I teach. This class is all about engaging students and making things fun while students are still learning. These lock boxes, locks and materials fit right into that idea. The lock boxes will be used to engage all students in my room. My students will need to work together in a collaborative effort in order to break the code. I will be able to use the lock boxes to introduce or review ANY subject or idea. Students will need to think critically and collaborate with their peers in order to break into the boxes. They will be given clues that will lead them to a code for the lock and there will be something waiting for them in the box. For example, I plan to use these lock boxes to introduce South Dakota history. Students will not know where they will be traveling, but will soon find out once they break through the lock box. I plan to have South Dakota passports in the lockbox. Students will be given clues and puzzles associated with South Dakota in order to break the lock. I also plan to use it as a review breakout game for my health unit. Students will get clues about nutrition, exercise, and hygiene. Once they have broken the code, their prize will be a fresh fruit snack. My students will thoroughly enjoy these lock boxes and be engaged in every way possible. They will work collaboratively with their peers and feel a sense of accomplishment once they have broken the code.
