As a teacher of bilingual students, I consistently seek out new ways to facilitate a deeper involvement of families with the school. While at our Spanish-speaking Bilingual nights throughout the year, parents often express that they wish there was more they could do at home to support their child. This is hard for parents who speak limited English. Having a bigger selection of bilingual books in my classroom, will show both parents and students that their language is valued. It will give parents the resources to read with their child at home, in their native language. Students need to see how much their families value education and their families need to see how much the school values their native language. If this project is fully-funded, my students will have access to many new books, all of which are in their native language. Students will be encouraged to borrow the books and read at home with their families. Additionally, families will be welcomed into the school for a evening of reading, using books purchased just for them. They will be given strategies to facilitate discussions and instill a love of learning. All families will leave the Bilingual Book Showcase with a renewed hope of keeping their native language alive in their children and deeply valued at school. Please help me reach each and every family in our school community, especially those with whom I do not speak the same language. Thank-you for your support!
