In my classroom, we are becoming readers. In order for students to develop independent reader confidence, they must first become independent thinkers, learners, and tryers. I support them through seating choice within the classroom, tools to set goals and monitor their progress, reading conferences to check their learning, and opportunities to share and learn from their peers. Our students come from difficult backgrounds in a difficult neighborhood. They have daily struggles outside of the classroom. Every student within our school receives a free lunch. Despite all these things, they continue to have a desire to learn and grow. They want to be better and they want to do more. Everyday I am proud to be their teacher. They are the best students a teacher could ever ask for.
