Girls want to read about themselves as strong, determined, and powerful characters with just a hint of drama to make it fun, not homework. I am sponsoring a year long 8th grade ALL GIRL book club during our school's enrichment period. Being a teenage girl is hard enough but at a large school they sometimes feel like they aren't seen or heard. I am starting this book club to foster a sense of community and give young ladies a safe space to share about important issues that effect their lives. The books I have chosen will help my students connect their own lives to literature. We will use all the wonderful literacy strategies I have used while teaching language arts and social studies (picturing, connection, predicting, and more) but we will be "learning" while building a GIRL POWER community.
