In order for my students to learn how to knit, they will need these materials: yarn, knitting needles, patterns, and storage containers. Also, I would love for my students to have access to different texts about knitting. All of the books I have chosen have underlying messages that are relevant and meaningful to children. For example, one text addresses the gender bias that all knitters are girls. Another teaches the reader the importance of charity. Wouldn't it be great if I could inspire every student to knit something for someone in need! In his article entitled, Discover Waldorf Education: Knitting and Intellectual Development: The Role of Handwork in the Waldorf Curriculum, Schwartz Eugene states that for 90 years, knitting has been a vital part of the Waldorf curriculum because it "stimulate(s) intellectual development and instill(s) a sense of achievement in the child." Through firsthand experience, I also know that knitting can help channel nervous energy by keeping the mind and hands busy. During indoor recess, my eight and nine year olds are expected to remain seated without an engaging activity. As a result, they often times find it difficult to make positive choices. If they knit during this time, they would be less likely to get into trouble. Also, they would begin to experience the benefits of knitting not only at school, but at home. Help give children an invaluable tool that they can use today and in the future!
