My school is a small (less than 600 students) early college school located in the poorest congressional district in the city. There are approximately 75 students in the junior class. While many of my students have high ambitions, they need practice developing reading and comprehension skills. Almost all of the students in my junior classes intend to go to college but they need to work hard and read and respond to challenging material or they will not survive beyond the first semester. They need material that will hold their interest, that will promote discussion of current topics, and that is wise and beautifully written.
