I've been teaching school, mostly first grade, for 23 years, but this year I'll be launching something brand new - the music/art position for the whole school! My principal came to me in April and proposed the idea, indicating that she was trying to find someone "in house" and believing that I could do the job. Wow. I love watching the astounding creativity and freedom that little children exhibit when given the tools and appropriate motivational art project! So much of what they produce definitely suitable for framing and hanging in the house! The music program I offer will not only send them out of the classroom singing, it will enhance their lives, lift their spirits. We'll learn some basic music elements as well as the classic children's songs. Unfortunately, my new classroom will be an old portable with only two windows at each of the building and a shabby carpet that's old and almost threadbare. I'm hoping to add a bright, colorful area rug for the children to listen for instruction and interact in other ways. They deserve a pleasing environment that will excite and awaken their senses.
