The Kern River is essentially in our backyard, yet many of our students have ever been to see it nor ever been fishing. When talking about the drought in class, most students relate to the dry grass in front of houses or the fields by the freeways. By taking them to Upper Richbar, Hart Park, or any other approved site to release our trout, we are able to not only talk about the life cycle of the trout, but we can talk about the ecosystem as a whole. This project is requesting one Active Aqua Chiller for the new aquarium we'll be purchasing. In order to grow properly, the trout have to be raised cold water that resembles the Kern River's winter water temperature. By planting the fry into the river BHS agriculture students get the chance to contribute to repopulating a small number of fish to the Kern River population. They learn that many fishermen regularly take more than they are supposed to take on a daily basis, so hatcheries and trout programs like ours help replenish the trout numbers to help stabilize the ecosystem. Students also learn that we plant sterile trout as they are not a native species that we are introducing to the area. So many great concepts are taught through this project.
