I have never been one to shy away from a challenge, but upon entering my classroom, a 9th-11th grade special needs classroom in the Bronx, mid year, I never expected my largest challenge to be technology related. In a world where technology is second nature to anyone born after 2000, I made a false assumption that my students would be able to navigate technology easily. What I quickly came to understand is that students need to be exposed to technology in order to succeed with operating it. In a classroom with 12 students, 2 desktops (1 for the teacher), and 1 chalkboard, it became a quick realization that there was a dire need for more technology in the classroom. Additionally, many of my students do not return home at the end of the day to find technology either. Although our desktop rotation schedule has built both a teamwork atmosphere and an understanding about sharing in the classroom, the lack of technology overall presents both challenges for the present moment, but implications for the future as well. A donation to our Chromebook project would mean helping a group of 12 students not only with learning in a classroom, but also with career development and job application training. We appreciate any donation, small or large, that is contributed to our team!
