Students will learn culture and Spanish language by reading the novel Robo en la Noche by Kristy Placido. Engaging in literature written in Spanish provides students with rich, comprehensible input. Comprehensible input is essential to language success because new language is contextualized in language they already understand. Your donation will help increase student engagement and achievement by moving away from traditional grammar-and-vocab language instruction to meaningful, communicative language classes. This high-interest novel makes culture understandable and interesting to students. Robo en la noche is a powerful novel to use in Spanish class because of the cultural themes addressed. My students will work with authentic texts on topics surrounding the environment and Costa Rica. They will delve into real life problems and collaborate to propose possible solutions to environmental problems. Reading this novel will enable my students to travel to Costa Rica where they will learn about the environment, ecotourism and sustainability in the Spanish language in order to become global citizens with the background knowledge in order to create change.
