Our students predominantly receive their individual (1:1) speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy in the hallway. Attention and focus is a challenge for many of our students and the high traffic hallways can be extremely distracting. It is difficult for many to fully engage in and receive the full benefit of services in a 30 minute time span with constant interruption. Individual sessions with therapists are important tools for building the communication, fine motor, and gross motor skills our students need before they begin to use and practice the skill within the classroom environment. With dividers placed in areas of the hall where therapy is taking place, visual distractions can be reduced or eliminated to enhance the benefits of individual therapy sessions. Another obstacle we as therapists in a high poverty area face is lack of proper equipment and materials to serve our students. Creating a space that is comfortable for the child and ergonomically appropriate for them to work in is an important aspect of successful therapy sessions. We are in need of a table and chairs for our young students to sit at which are a suitable size for them to be able to access table top activities and provide a conducive medium for communication to occur. Student access to information and participation in all areas of their education is the ultimate goal of all therapy services. Improvement in individual session quality will improve skill acquisition, thus preparing the student more quickly for using their skills in the classroom and other school locations.
