My students are inquirers everyday in our math classroom. They wrestle with problems on a daily basis, trying to gain a deep understanding of each topic. In a class period, students are given a problem, and they have to figure out the best way to begin and work through with scaffolds provided by their peers and their teacher. The use of calculators is important so students are not stopped by the lack of ability to calculate figures. Most days, the goal is to have students develop a deeper conceptual understanding of a topic rather than rote practice of an algorithm. We use iPads every day, but it is important for them to also use calculators as a calculator can give other supports and benefits that an iPad calculator is not able to do. Also, we cannot use iPad calculators during our state assessments, so it is important to have experience with using handheld calculators in class.
