My project is an effort to purchase a set of books (Thirteen Reasons Why) for a reading project my students will complete this year. My goal with any reading project is to give my students a new perspective on a situation, or to have them gain knowledge they can use later in life to connect to the bigger concept of the world. What is the goal of education? To have students repeat back to us facts? I believe the true point of education is to create kind, productive, and creative people. To cultivate leadership in students so that they can go out into the world and make an impact. Two of the biggest characteristics that contribute to being a truly good person are compassion and empathy; characteristics that seem to be lacking in our society. The best and easiest place for the next generation to learn this is in the classroom. It is a place where they learn tolerance, communication, and teamwork. This novel provides a protagonist that is my students’ age and faces many of the issues they face. By reading the story and understanding how actions have consequences, and how we treat others can make a bigger impact than we think, they will gain a point of view that they did not have before and will help them grow as individuals.
