I am requesting a class set of calculators. In my math class, I have a very diverse set of needs. My students aren't exposed to math as you might have been. Math is very difficult for them and something they do not always want to do. However, I always encourage them to try their best. Sometimes, they get discouraged because they get to the end and their answer doesn't work. Usually, their answers are incorrect because of a simple miscalculation. If my students had calculators, they could do the problem with pencil and paper, then when they discover an error was made, they would have a calculator to go back and check their work. This would allow them to quickly identify the problem and continue on with the problem. If each of my students had a calculator, they would be able to check their own long hand calculations. This would allow them to be more self-sufficient and confident in math. The calculator would not be an alternative for paper/pencil problem solving but a way to help check if their calculations are correct. As a teacher, it is impossible to check 30 students' work in one class period. These calculators would allow my students to become more independent and allow me to help students who need additional help. These calculators would help make my class more independent and successful!
