My students know the importance of holding a book in their hands. They understand that within the pages of a book, the personal connections, thoughts, ideas, and emotions rise up that make it a meaningful way to learn and grow. The book, FRONT DESK, is a great way to connect, think beyond the text, and expand on empathy among my students. FRONT DESK is centered around diversity and multiculturalism. The main character, a young, girl named Mia Tang helps manage a hotel that her parents run. Mia helps her parents hide immigrants from the owner of the hotel as many of these immigrants lack the funds to pay for a night stay. In addition, the book focuses on Mia's dream to become a writer. However, her mother feels Mia should stick to math as English is not her first language and her mother is worried about her future. Mia knows what she wants and what she needs to do.
This book provides a look at the struggles our families go through on a daily basis. However, with a positive attitude, a support system, and believing in a dream, as we all know, anything is possible. I want to allow my students diversity in their reading. It is so important to connect with characters like ourselves and visualize the ideas and understand the thoughts that the characters in the book are feeling. What a gift to give this opportunity to my students through this amazing novel, FRONT DESK.
