In a balanced literacy program, students need to be exposed to stories and texts above their reading level through a teacher read aloud. This provides an opportunity for students to hear a fluent reader in a shared listening experience. The books I choose to read to my students have always evoked strong emotion for me. My students get to hear me laugh, get angry, and even see my cry during our read aloud. My project will put a copy of 2 of my favorite read aloud texts into the hands of my students. If they choose, they will be able to follow along with me, or check out the text to re-read on their own. Some teachers ask me if it bothers me that students use a copy of the text to read ahead of where we are as a class. I tell them no. My students are reading, and that is what I want for all of them.
