Strategically-written and engaging TPRS novels which highlight high frequency vocabulary in the context of fun story lines are an important component in developing proficiency in Spanish learners. These novels are written with language on a level that my students can understand in context. They provide just the right amount of challenge without being frustrating to beginners. My students' confidence in the language is boosted when they can say "I read and understood the whole thing!" By surrounding my students with comprehensible input on a daily basis, both orally and in written form, I am giving them the support they need not just to pass a grammar test or a vocabulary quiz, but to actually acquire the language!
