These novel materials, such as Rainbow Sorting Crayons and Monkey Foam, will provide opportunities for small group work with children of differing abilities supporting each other by being language models. Engaging with turn-taking games will allow all children to work on this valuable skill. Interacting with these novel materials will also spark new vocabulary and meaningful conversations. Important preschool pre-academic tasks such as sorting, counting, patterning (math; and strengthening muscles necessary for early writing skills, are best retained when presented in play-based ways with interesting materials. Using sensory materials such as play dough and sand is calming and sparks creativity. It encourages sharing, pretend play and artistic expression.
