According to NAEYC, research shows the earlier we guide and support children's wonder about the world, the more successful they are in all areas of learning later on in life. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math. My students will engage in STEM-focused play and hands-on learning in both formal and informal settings. These materials will provide hands-on opportunities for my students to persevere in solving problems and taking risks by using trial and error through exploration. The students will learn that it is okay to try, fail, and try again. I will set up STEM-focused centers at least once a week for students to freely explore and construct with the materials. The OSMO Coding Game will extend the educational use of our OSMO game system that we currently use in our literacy centers. This game will introduce students to coding and possibly spark an interest for future computer programming careers. Previous STEM lessons have engaged my young students in ways that surpassed my expectations. When a parent asked questions about what had her child so excited about "building a bridge at school", I decided to use these activities to strengthen the home/school connection and involve parents in our learning. The "Family Engagement STEM Packs" will allow the students to take what they are learning home.
