As a high school English teacher for 20 years, I have had the tremendous opportunity to create, develop and teach two courses I love: World Literature and, more recently, Literature of the African Diaspora. Both courses allow me to expose my students to myriad global perspectives, as well as to the beauty of language across time and cultures. But my signature successes and fondest memories with my students have involved performances (incorporating music and movement) that bring the literature, particularly Shakespeare, to its feet, and by extension, to life.
