My goal as an ELA teacher is to prepare students to be career and college ready. The reality is that many of the jobs of tomorrow may not even exist today. As a result, it is imperative that we give students opportunities to develop 21st-century skills. Skills like independence and innovation, collaboration, and the appropriate use of technology. Chromebooks are that opportunity. Having Chromebooks in class fosters independence and innovation. Using Google Sites as a platform, scholars can design and manage individualized ePortfolio sites that reflect them as learners and stays with them through their academic career. Additionally, they will have access to multiple applications such as Google Docs, Presentations, and Blogger to express their understanding of a topic and reflect on their own learning. Chromebooks can also be used to increase collaboration and differentiation. Google Docs allows me to provide immediate feedback that is tailored to my scholar's individual needs in real time, and the comment thread can be utilized by students to privately ask clarifying questions. Furthermore, students can share documents with each other and provide peer feedback. I can employ the google platform in order to share multiple and differentiated resources like exemplars, videos, audio recordings etc. that can be used to support learning. While my scholars may be considered digital natives, that does not mean they know how to use technology appropriately and effectively. Having Chromebooks in class would allow me to teach and model positive and constructive uses of technology. Thus, better preparing them for success in college and the workplace. Donations to this project will give scholars equal access to learning that will not only close the achievement gap but also promote 21st-century skills.
