I am the librarian in an area learning center, where the majority of our students are children of color. Many of them, along with living with poverty, gang violence and the possibility of homelessness, face the challenges of developmental disabilities and mental illness. Several times a week, I have the honor of reading to our younger students. We have a modest collection of children's books, but many of them feature only caucasian characters. Our students love story time, but I feel our books are more like windows, where the children look out onto a world different from their own. I want to enlarge our collection of children's books that feature characters who come from diverse cultural and societal backgrounds, where the stories are more like mirrors, where our students can look, and see themselves smiling back!
