Children need to have options for free movement within a classroom. Requiring them to sit in a desk, in the same position for the entire day leads to inattentiveness and disengagement. Project-based learning and the incorporation of 21st-century skills such as collaboration, problem solving, communication and critical thinking occur daily within our classroom. This type of active learning environment requires movement and choice when it comes to seating options. When students are comfortable and allowed choice, to include seating options, a classroom becomes a place where they feel safe and eager to take risks within their learning. As adults, we work in a variety of different seating arrangements. Children need to be offered that same choice. The variety of seating options will only add to our student-centered environment. Instead of traditional desks and chairs, students should be offered a more modern day approach to learning to help them perform to the best of their ability. Please help our third grade classrooms begin this endeavor of offering the best learning environment for our students.
