These books are on my students' lexile levels (low and higher), and speak to themes they are dealing with as teenagers. These high-interest texts will encourage them to do independent reading, increasing their exposure to literature and ultimately increasing their literacy and reading level. I have included Games for Actors and Non-Actors to use in building positive classroom culture, and some how-to resources on writing, since we will be exploring creative writing this year. These texts will all live in our classroom and build our classroom lending library. We'll use them for SSR (silent sustained reading), for inspiration and support on writing projects, and as reflections of teens much like the students themselves in literature. Oakland Unified is in a budget crisis. Our school has a library, but no librarian-- we don't have room in our budget. We have books that nobody can check out. We are trying to close the achievement gap for these students. How can we do this without giving them access to books? Teachers need to find ways to do it on their own. Please support these high-need students in our public school.
