Building number sense is extremely important for young learners. In our classroom we will use the rekenreks to build that number sense by working with numbers. We will use these to build, decompose, and break down numbers during our math talk time. Using math talk, we are building our confidence as future mathematicians. We will use open ended problems for them to solve in creative ways. There may be several correct answers to the same problem. Students learn that there is no one right or wrong way to solve a problem. Their thinking and communication skills are most improved as they explain how they came to their own solution. Students also learn how to build on each other's thinking by agreeing, disagreeing, or adding to their classmates problem solving.
