Last year I completed a Masters In Literacy. My Thesis concerned Blended Learning. I discovered that technology can be effectively used to motivate and scaffold students literacy learning. One of the keys to unlocking students love of learning is to provide them with real life resources and with tools that will support them toward this goal. I have discovered a number of apps and online programs which do this. I found that in my action research the use of apps such as EPIC! and Plickers fostered a love of reading. This love of reading blossomed and grew so much that my student were confessing their love of reading wholeheartedly by the end of the year. The biggest surprise was that even though we used the technology, the number of students who loved to read paper and print books increased. I have found that it is difficult to replicate my last year’s success due to the lack of available technology in our school district. The number of devices available in the schools only allows us to use technology once or twice a week. Blended learning works best in a 1-1 student device scenario. In order to achieve this, I hope to purchase several Kindle Fire tablets, use existing devices and borrow devices when they are available. I would love to have the newest latest and greatest devices, however, I feel that it is not necessary to have new devices. My students can learn to love learning using whatever is available, I just want to make it available.
