A class without books is like a house with no windows. Reading is at the heart of learning in the first grade. The students come from varied economic backgrounds where sometimes the only place they get to read is at school. The donations of this project will help students get the instruction that they deserve in literacy. In my classroom, we practice reading daily! This is hard to do with limited resources. Every student deserves to have a book in their hand. Books should be windows into other worlds that the children may not be familiar with. Students should be able to live others' lives through books. I want them to walk in the forest with Mogli in the Jungle Book and swim with Arial, The Little Mermaid, in the sea. I want them to see the suburban life of Henry and Mudge, as well as the urban life of Jeremy in Those Shoes. These windows give way to curiosity and inquiry. This is how students’ schemas expand and grow. This is why a teacher’s library needs to be filled with books.
