I teach third grade in a low income neighborhood. The children come to school to get a good meal, to get attention and to be safe. This neighborhood is gang infested. We are taught to do the Drop Drill regularly in case of drive by shootings. They live in fear, mostly taking care of themselves at home because their parents work all different shifts. Here at school our main job is to teach them state standards and make sure they succeed. They work all the time and barely have time to play and be kids. At home they can't play outside either because of the danger. These children need some fun activities.
