This project has been something I have wanted to do for a period of time due to changing positions. I want all of my students to find a love for reading, and I believe that this begins with allowing them to find books that they want to read. Something I also find important, is for my students to have access to texts in which they can imagine themselves, empathize with the characters, and live within the text they are reading. Some of the texts I am requesting were specifically asked for by students because they could tell they could relate to them, like "Dear Martin" and "The Hate U Give". There have also been students who have asked for more texts, and have expressed interest in texts in which have students with similar schooling experiences as them like "A Child Called It," "Educated: A Memoir," and "Autobiography of a Face." There are then other students who have expressed interest in learning about history, but through historical fiction texts like "Four Perfect Pebbles: A True Story of the Holocaust," "The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club," and "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban." Other books that were chosen were because of recommendations from other teachers, such as "Little Fires Everywhere," and "Less: A Novel." Through having a variety of students I want to make sure I also have a variety of books. Think of the texts that you have fallen in love with in the past, and there are usually texts that you have interest in because of being able to understand the characters and the topics. My students do not always get that due to the variety of experiences they bring.
